Avocado Peel Packed with Health Benefits, Scientists Discover
ISTANBUL – Researchers have identified 70 species of phenolic compounds within the peel of Hass avocados, revealing meaningful potential health benefits previously overlooked. Experts say these compounds can support energy production, help lower blood pressure, and protect heart health.
While the peel has a naturally bitter taste, it can be incorporated into diets through simple processing methods. One popular approach is “avocado peel tea,” prepared by boiling thoroughly washed peels for five minutes, then adding honey or ginger to the resulting light golden liquid. This tea is believed to aid digestion and boost the immune system due to its antioxidant properties.
Another method involves drying the washed peels - either baking them at 120 degrees Celsius for 40 minutes or using a microwave – and then blending them into a fine powder. This powder can be added to smoothies, yogurt, or salads. Though, experts caution that high temperatures during drying may reduce the concentration of some polyphenols.
Beyond nutrition, avocado peel is gaining traction in the cosmetics industry. extracts from the peel are now being used in natural moisturizing creams and anti-aging serums, with studies suggesting they can reduce wrinkles by increasing collagen production in the skin.
nutritionists emphasize the value of this often-discarded resource. “Before throwing the avocado in the trash, it is necessary to realize the power inside its peel,” they state, suggesting a shift towards greater utilization of the peel could become widespread. The findings highlight avocado peel as a valuable, natural resource for both health and reducing food waste.
