Avilés Mayor Hosts Honorees Ahead of Friday’s Prestigious Sports Gala
Avilés, Spain – Athletes, coaches, adn sporting organizations set to be recognized at teh 2025 Premios
The annual gala recognizes both established sporting figures and rising talent, underscoring the importance of athletics to the city’s identity and well-being. This year’s event carries particular significance as it honors individuals with Paralympic and European Championship accolades alongside those fostering grassroots growth and team successes. The awards highlight not only athletic prowess but also the commitment of individuals who have shaped and propelled sports within the region.
Among those receiving special recognition is Alba garcía, celebrated as one of Avilés’ most accomplished athletes. The gala will also honor José Andrés Blanco, a Paralympic medalist in cycling, having secured two medals at the 2000 Sydney Games in both road and track events. Judoka Isabel Cortavitarte, a two-time european Championship medalist (1982, 1988), will also be acknowledged for her contributions.
Further accolades will be presented to Francisco José Blanco, a key figure in the development of rock climbing in Asturias, and Fernando Fernández Núñez, former sports director of the Fundación Deportiva Municipal.Recognition for achievements in sport at the base level will go to the Óscar Fernández club, specializing in judo and sambo wrestling, and to Ana Sáez, a talented synchronized swimmer.
The gala will also celebrate the successes of local teams, including Avilés, Navarro, Valeo, and La Curtidora, acknowledging their ascensions within their respective leagues. Additionally, the 25th anniversaries of Judo Avilés, the San Agustín cycling group, and the Llaranes club will be commemorated.
