Strengthening Nigeria-Brazil Relations
The landmark agreement for the direct flight was a key outcome of the recent state visit by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Brazil, where he met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. the announcement signals a commitment from both governments to deepen collaboration and facilitate increased connectivity.
During a joint press conference, President Lula affirmed the agreement, stating, Increasing the direct connections between Nigeria and Brazil is another essential step to strengthen the ties between our societies. We have approved the launch of a direct flight, to be operated by Nigeria’s largest airline company, Air Peace, between Lagos and São Paulo.
This new route is expected to considerably reduce travel times and costs for passengers and cargo alike.

The direct flight agreement was just one component of a broader series of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) signed at the palácio do Planalto in Brasília following an extensive two-hour bilateral meeting between the two leaders. - Political Consultations: An MOU was established for regular political consultations, enabling both nations to address shared concerns and coordinate strategies on regional and international issues.
- Science, Technology & Innovation: Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Geoffrey Nnaji, and Brazil’s Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Luciana Santos, inked an MOU promoting cooperation in critical areas including biotechnology, bioeconomy, ocean science, innovation ecosystems, energy, space development, digital transformation, and raw materials research.
