From Luxury Yachts to the Operating Room: Doctor Balances Medicine wiht Entrepreneurship
Stockholm, Sweden - A Swedish physician is charting a unique course, seamlessly blending a career in medicine with a passion for guiding aspiring yacht crew members. Lisa Emlund, 33, recently began her position as an AT doctor (intern) at Södersjukhuset hospital in Stockholm, following her graduation in 2023, while simultaneously running a company dedicated to helping young people enter the luxury yachting industry.
Emlund’s journey began with her own experiences working on yachts, developing adaptability and confidence that she now applies to her medical practice. Recognizing a need for guidance within the yachting world, she and Helena Hammarström founded Yachting Sweden in 2018. The company assists individuals navigating the complexities of finding work in the industry, born from their own initial struggles to find reliable information.
“We noticed when we posted pictures from our trips that people were very curious, and since we also did not know how to attend there in the beginning it happened that we went some needless courses,” Emlund explained. “When we realized that people needed help navigating in the industry, we decided to start our own. The interest in the Yachting world is huge!”
Balancing the demands of medical studies and entrepreneurship required a unique skillset. “It is as if you use two fully different parts of the brain, because it is so different,” Emlund said.”The medical program is about entering information, memorizing and understanding. Running a business has been so much more creative.”
Prior to her hospital position, emlund worked as a sub-physician at a health centre and took parental leave. She anticipates continuing to contribute to yachting Sweden even as a new mother, with a baby due in five months.
While she once considered practicing medicine on yachts – having witnessed a vessel with a dedicated medical team - Emlund’s ambitions now lie elsewhere. “I am passionate more about running a business in itself,” she stated. “One dream I have is to become a gynecologist, work with fertility medicine and run their own around it.”
