Tigers Prospects Fall to Pirates in Spring Breakout – 2026 Game Recap
BRADENTON, FL – Prospects from the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated prospects from the Detroit Tigers 8-7 Friday night at LECOM Park in the annual Spring Breakout game, marking the third year of the showcase event.
Pittsburgh’s top pitching prospect, Seth Hernandez, started the game for the Pirates and impressed in his first game action since being drafted sixth overall in 2025. Hernandez, 19, threw a scoreless first inning, reaching 102 mph on his first pitch, according to video posted on social media by Young Bucs (@YoungBucsPIT). The velocity stunned Max Clark, the Tigers’ third overall pick from the 2023 draft.
The Tigers utilized several of their own highly-regarded prospects, including Clark in center field and 2025 first-round selection Jordan Yost at shortstop, according to a gamethread on Yahoo Sports. Hard-throwing relief prospect Marco Jimenez started on the mound for Detroit.
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the third inning, the Pirates rallied with a grand slam from Tony Blanco Jr. Blanco, who played in 30 games between the FCL and Low-A Bradenton last season, sent a shot over the left-field seats. He finished the 2025 season hitting .259 with an .859 OPS, eight home runs and 23 RBI.
The Spring Breakout game, now in its third year, provides an opportunity for fans to see the future stars of Major League Baseball. Alan Trammell managed the Tigers for the second consecutive year in the event, having won the previous two iterations.
The Tigers’ farm system now holds a 2-1 record in the Spring Breakout series.
