Brewers Roster shuffle: Quintana Returns, Alexander DFA’d
Milwaukee – The Milwaukee Brewers have designated left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander for assignment, the team announced this morning. This move clears a roster spot for fellow southpaw Jose Quintana, who is being activated from the injured list.
Alexander’s Performance and Future
Alexander, who turns 31 next month, has struggled this season, posting a 6.19 earned run average (ERA) over 36 1/3 innings. This figure is 35% worse than the league average, as measured by ERA+.
However, advanced metrics suggest Alexander’s performance may have been impacted by bad luck. his batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is a high .331, and his strand rate is a low 47.2%.These numbers indicate that Alexander has experienced poor fortune with batted balls and runners left on base, which is reflected in his fielding independent pitching (FIP) of 3.58 and his skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) of 4.27.
Alexander’s career ERA is 4.67. his ability to handle multiple roles and eat innings could make him an attractive option for teams seeking pitching depth. The Brewers have one week to either trade Alexander or place him on outright waivers. If he clears waivers, he could be assigned to the minor leagues, but he has enough service time to reject the assignment and become a free agent.
Quintana’s Return Bolsters Rotation
Quintana’s return provides a boost to the Brewers’ starting rotation. Earlier this year, he made six starts and recorded an impressive 2.65 ERA, despite a less favorable 4.56 FIP. He was placed on the injured list in early May due to a shoulder impingement.
Quintana is scheduled to start today against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. His return will provide stability to a rotation that has recently relied on rookie Quinn Priester and Chad Patrick, as well as veterans freddy Peralta and Aaron Civale. Tobias Myers, Elvin Rodriguez, and Logan Henderson have also been used as fill-ins throughout the season but are currently in the minor leagues.
Brewers’ Recent success and Future Outlook
Quintana’s return comes as the brewers are trying to build on recent momentum. They have won their last six games, improving their record to 31-28,and are now only 2.5 games back in the Wild Card race. Frist baseman Rhys Hoskins has been a key contributor to an offence that is starting to perform well. Brandon Woodruff is also expected to return to the rotation in the near future.
