Tigers Acquire Chris Paddack in Trade with Twins

Detroit Tigers Bolster rotation with Trade for Chris Paddack

The Detroit Tigers have significantly strengthened their starting pitching depth by acquiring right-hander Chris Paddack from the Minnesota Twins. The deal, finalized on Monday, also brings fellow righty Randy Dobnak to Detroit, while the Tigers send catching/first-base prospect Enrique Jimenez to Minnesota.

Paddack, 29, is expected to make his debut for the Tigers on Wednesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Dobnak has been assigned to the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate in Toledo.

This acquisition addresses a critical need for the Tigers, who have been searching for a fifth starter since losing Jackson Jobe to a season-ending torn ulnar collateral ligament. The situation became even more urgent later on Monday when the Tigers announced that 25-year-old right-hander Reese Olson will also miss the remainder of the regular season due to a shoulder strain.

Paddack, who is set to become a free agent at the conclusion of the current season, has posted a 4.95 ERA through his first 21 starts this year. In 111 innings pitched, he has recorded 83 strikeouts against 27 walks. He was one of six Twins players eligible for free agency this offseason.

Dobnak, 30, has primarily played in Triple-A this season, where he has a 7.12 ERA in 17 appearances, including 10 starts. The prospect heading to Minnesota, 19-year-old Enrique Jimenez, was signed out of Venezuela and was batting .250 with a .339 on-base percentage and a.440 slugging percentage at the Tigers’ rookie-level affiliate.
