Tiger Woods’ 2026 Masters Plan: TGL Return & Road to Augusta

March 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Tiger Woods will build his competitive return Tuesday night in the TGL Finals, stepping into the lineup for Jupiter Links GC as they attempt to stave off elimination against the Los Angeles Golf Club. The appearance marks Woods’ first tournament play since the 2024 Open Championship and comes as he evaluates his readiness for a potential 27th start at the Masters Tournament in April.

Jupiter Links lost the opening match of the best-of-three finals series to Los Angeles on Monday night, 6-5, setting up a must-win scenario for Woods and his team. Should Jupiter Links secure a victory Tuesday evening, an immediate rubber match will be played to determine the TGL champion. It remains unclear whether Woods would participate in both potential matches.

The 50-year-old Woods underwent a disc replacement surgery in October 2025 to address a collapsed lumbar disc, his seventh back surgery since 2014. Prior to that, he had declared himself fully recovered from a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained before the 2025 Masters, stating that regaining comfort with his back was the final hurdle to a return to competitive golf. He has been actively practicing and assessing his physical condition with the Masters in mind.

The TGL Finals provide a controlled environment for Woods to test his game. Following the TGL Finals, Woods is considering a start at the Hoag Classic on the PGA Tour Champions, where players are permitted to use golf carts. This would allow him to conserve energy and assess his stamina over three competitive rounds before potentially tackling the demanding course at Augusta National.

Woods has a storied history at the Masters, having won five green jackets – in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2019. Only Jack Nicklaus has more Masters victories. He has finished in the top 10 at the Masters nine times overall. Since his 2019 victory, Woods has made the cut in all four of his starts, but has not finished better than tied for 38th. He was forced to withdraw in 2023 although on the cut line.

While Woods has not ruled out competing at the 2026 Masters, he has acknowledged that simply completing four rounds at Augusta National would be a significant accomplishment given his recent physical challenges. He has repeatedly stated he would only compete if he believes he can contend for a victory.
