Thurgau Canton Updates: Constitutional Vote, Health Insurance & Hospital Tariffs
Constitutional Amendment to be Voted on June 14, 2026
A vote has been scheduled for June 14, 2026, on an amendment to the cantonal constitution regarding financial competencies. The Grand Council approved the changes on October 22, 2025, and as required, the amendment will be put to a public referendum. The proposed changes would increase the financial powers of both the Government Council and the Grand Council.
Government Supports Changes to Health Insurance Risk Compensation
The Government Council has expressed support for revisions to the regulation on risk compensation in health insurance.This includes incorporating insured individuals living abroad into the risk compensation scheme and ensuring uniform benefit financing. These changes stem from an amendment to the Federal Health Insurance Act on June 14, 2024, concerning data exchange and risk compensation.
2026 Hospital Reference tariffs Approved
The Government Council has approved and enacted the reference tariffs for inpatient hospital services, effective January 1, 2026. These tariffs govern hospital financing and ensure patients can choose from listed hospitals across Switzerland. Costs are covered proportionally by the insurer and the canton of residence, capped at the tariff rate applicable in the patient’s canton. The tariffs, recommended by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Health Directors, are published annually and are available on the Office of Public Health website: https://gesundheit.tg.ch/
