Thunderstorm watch for Coromandel, funnels appear in Auckland skies

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Coromandel Peninsula

Localised Downpours Expected to Bring Heavy Rainfall

A severe weather watch has been issued for the Coromandel Peninsula, with thunderstorms expected to bring intense rainfall and potential flooding. Residents in low-lying areas should prepare for hazardous conditions this Sunday morning.

Auckland’s Brush with Severe Weather

After a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Franklin and sections of Auckland, the weather weakened and shifted. Despite the warning’s lift, cloud formations that appeared as funnels were observed over east Auckland suburbs. Forecasters had predicted the possibility of such events.

Scott Davies witnessed the formation of a large funnel cloud from Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. It moved over the Whitford area at around 2:50 pm.

Coromandel’s Forecast: Heavy Rain on Sunday

The Coromandel Peninsula is anticipated to face heavy localized downpours, measuring between 25-40 mm/h from 1 am to 9 am on Sunday. This slow-moving trough has the potential for intense thunderstorms and heavy rain during Sunday morning.

“Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.”

Flash floods cause billions of dollars of damage globally each year (Statista, 2024). Driving conditions will also be dangerous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.

Weather Hazards

Heavy showers are still forecast for Auckland throughout the afternoon and early evening. These conditions heighten the danger on roads, necessitating increased caution for drivers and those traveling within the affected regions. Residents should stay informed and take necessary precautions.
