Thomson Box 245: Turn Any TV into a Google TV with this New Streaming Device
Thomson has launched the Streaming Box 245 with Google TV, a new device designed to transform older televisions into smart TVs. The streaming box, priced at €89.90, offers a significant upgrade over its predecessor, the Box 240, with a focus on improved performance and expanded storage.
The Box 245 connects to any TV via HDMI, providing full access to the Google TV ecosystem and a wide range of streaming apps including Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, and Spotify. Users can control the device with their existing TV remote using HDMI CEC, or with the included new remote control featuring backlit buttons for improved visibility.
A key improvement in the new model is the hardware. The Box 245 utilizes the Amlogic S905Y5-B chipset, replacing the previous generation’s Y4 chip. Internal storage has been quadrupled from 8GB to 32GB, allowing for more installed applications and downloaded content. RAM remains at 2GB.
The device supports 4K Ultra HD streaming at up to 60 frames per second and incorporates support for both HEVC and AV1 video codecs. USB-A and USB-C ports are included for connecting external storage devices. Audio capabilities include Dolby Atmos support, though Dolby Vision HDR is not supported; the device utilizes HDR10 instead.
According to Thomson, the Streaming Box 245 is positioned as a more substantial upgrade than a simple cosmetic refresh, addressing performance issues that can arise with Google TV’s heavier interface and persistent background services. The increased processing power and storage are intended to maintain smooth operation and prevent slowdowns over time, particularly when switching between apps and services.
The Thomson Box 245 is slated for release across Europe in the coming weeks. It sits below the higher-complete Thomson Box Plus 270 in the company’s product lineup, which offers features like Dolby Vision and additional RAM.
