Thomas Tuchel admits guilty conscience over lack of contact with City players

October 2, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Thomas Tuchel admitted to holding a guilty conscience over his lack of communication with Manchester City players in his England squad, as reports revealed the manager’s focus during the international break following the Premier League’s confirmation of a guilty verdict against the club over financial breaches.

Tuchel Admits Oversight on City Contingent During Nations League Fixtures

England secured a 2-0 victory against the Czech Republic on Tuesday evening in the UEFA Nations League, bouncing back from a 3-2 defeat against Spain in their opening fixture. Three Manchester City players—Elliot Anderson, Marc Guehi, and Nico O’Reilly—travelled with the squad for the fixtures. When asked by BBC Radio 5 Live whether he had spoken to Guehi, Anderson, and O’Reilly regarding the seismic legal news breaking back in England, Tuchel replied that he had a bad conscience because he had not reached out to them.

Tuchel explained that his attention remained strictly fixed on team preparation and the matches at hand. The Guardian reported that news of Manchester City being found guilty on all but one of the 115 charges broke on Friday afternoon, shifting attention away from preparations for the Wembley fixture against Spain. Despite the timing, Tuchel started Guehi, O’Reilly, and Anderson against Spain. BBC Sport noted that City chief executive Ferran Soriano released a video to the club’s 1,000 employees dismissing the Premier League’s case as a conspiracy theory.

Costing Errors and Defensive Struggles at Wembley

Defensive mistakes shaped the outcome of England’s 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley. BBC Sport detailed that Marc Guehi was tackled by Lamine Yamal on the edge of his own box, allowing the Spain winger to score the opening goal. Later in the match, former City player Rodri challenged Jude Bellingham to concede a penalty, which Harry Kane missed after slipping against the crossbar. Nico O’Reilly also had a pass intercepted deep in his own half, leading directly to Alex Baena’s equalizer for Spain.

Despite these incidents, England captain Harry Kane played down any links between the financial charges and player mistakes on the pitch. Kane told ITV Sport after Saturday’s match that players put club football to one side when representing the national team. The Guardian added that Tuchel similarly denied that the club’s legal situation acted as a distraction for the players, noting that while the squad likely discussed the matter given their free time, it did not impact their match preparation.

Bellingham Emerges as Contender for Permanent Captaincy

Beyond the immediate fallout of the Manchester City verdict, Tuchel pointed toward a potential leadership transition within the squad. As reported by the Daily Mail, Tuchel hinted that Jude Bellingham could eventually succeed Harry Kane as England’s permanent captain. Bellingham wore the armband after replacing Kane twenty minutes before the final whistle against the Czech Republic.

Tuchel noted that wearing the armband at the end of a match serves as a reward and indicates a player’s capacity to step into the role permanently. The manager added that Bellingham had not played much during the short spell of matches at the start of the season, prompting coaching staff to limit his minutes to protect his fitness. However, Tuchel revealed that Bellingham reported a minor injury at the end of the match in Prague, leaving his availability for the upcoming fixture against Croatia uncertain.
