Thilogne, Senegal – minister of Hydraulics and sanitation, Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, recently inspected ongoing flood control projects in Thilogne, a city especially vulnerable to seasonal flooding. The visit, conducted the day before yesterday, focused on the progress of a protective dike and the installation of runoff retarders, initiatives designed to safeguard the community.
Accompanied by Governor Saïd Dia, Prefect Téning Faye, and Mayor Mamadou Elimane Kane, Dr. Dièye toured the Saara district, the planned site for the 1.8-kilometer-long protective dike. This area is a critical convergence point for ravines surrounding the city, making it particularly susceptible to floodwaters. The dike aims to shield residents from river overflows and prevent water from reaching homes.
The delegation also visited the “Thiangol Halaybé” ravine, where retarders will be installed to slow the flow of runoff. These devices are intended to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall and reduce the risk of flash floods.
“Here, in Thilogne, a problem is experienced for many years which has become a vital question for the community. These are two ravines which cross the commune on both sides and which cause difficulties in the population,” Dr. Dièye stated.
dr. Dièye expressed satisfaction with the project’s initial progress, noting the swift response from authorities following instructions from the Prime Minister. He emphasized the commitment to quality construction, utilizing appropriate tools and techniques.
The construction of these vital protective works has been entrusted to military engineering, a decision Dr. Dièye justified by the armed forces’ proven ability to anticipate challenges and deliver high-quality results on urgent, structuring projects. Whenever we have important, structuring and urgent work that we want to implement, we trust the armed forces in their ability to anticipate things and do the expected quality work,
he explained.
Mayor Mamadou Elimane Kane echoed the sentiment of relief within the community. The population has been waiting for these protective works for years. We are between two ravines which are taking part of the city,
he said, adding that the projects will provide much-needed peace of mind to residents.
