Polish Football Fans Protest with Flares, Target football Association
Ta’ Qali, Malta - November 17, 2023 – A planned display of flares by Polish football supporters during the Euro 2024 qualifying match against Malta on Friday devolved into a pointed protest against the Polish Football Association (PZPN), prompting criticism and calls for change. The coordinated action, featuring a red and white checkered pattern created with flares, was widely interpreted as a presentation of discontent with the current leadership and direction of Polish football.
the protest underscores growing frustration among Polish fans regarding issues within the PZPN, including concerns over ticket pricing, stadium infrastructure, and perceived mismanagement. While Poland secured a 2-0 victory qualifying them for Euro 2024, the on-field success was overshadowed by the off-field demonstration. The incident raises questions about the relationship between the PZPN and its supporters and could lead to further action if grievances are not addressed.
Fans initiated the display in the 84th minute of the match, creating a visually striking, albeit disruptive, scene at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali. Images captured by photographers Marcin Karczewski of Pressfocus and Darrin Zammit Lupi of Reuters show a sea of red and white smoke enveloping sections of the stadium.
The PZPN has not yet issued a formal response to the protest, but the incident is expected to be a key topic of discussion in the coming days.
