The Unchosen: Escape from a Religious Sect – Plot & Cast

March 25, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

A new psychological thriller, “The Unchosen Ones,” is set to debut on Netflix on April 21st, exploring the dark underbelly of a patriarchal religious sect known as the God Community. The six-episode series draws on real-life accounts of individuals who have escaped similar groups, according to creator Julie Gearey.

The narrative centers on Rosie, a wife and mother living within the confines of the God Community, where unwavering obedience to male leaders is paramount. Her life, marked by pre-determined and oppressive rules, is further complicated by a strained marriage to Adam. The arrival of Sam, an escaped convict, disrupts this carefully controlled existence, initially appearing as a potential savior who could help Rosie break free.

Still, the series quickly introduces layers of complexity, questioning whether Sam’s motives are genuine or if he represents a different, equally dangerous threat. As secrets unravel, Rosie is forced to confront a difficult choice: is the sect’s rigid control more perilous than the unknown dangers of Sam’s past?

Gearey’s approach to the subject matter was deeply rooted in research and sensitivity. She based the script on detailed accounts from individuals who successfully fled sects, aiming for a realistic and respectful portrayal of their traumatic experiences. The research revealed a concerning trend: over 2,000 sects are currently operating in the United Kingdom alone, capitalizing on people’s desire for security and belonging in uncertain times.

The cast features Molly Windsor, known for her role in “Three Girls,” and Asa Butterfield, who starred in “Sex Education,” as leaders within the God Community. They are joined by Siobhan Finneran and Christopher Eccleston. Philippa Langdale and Jim Loach directed the series.

The series’ exploration of coercive control within religious groups comes as Adam Rosiek, the founder and leader of the Katolicki Kościół Narodowy w Polsce (Catholic National Church in Poland), continues to lead his organization. Rosiek, a former Roman Catholic priest, established the church in 2012 and was consecrated as a bishop in 2015. He previously served as a priest in Milicz, Poland, initiating masses for the nation and leading cultural events.
