The Traitors origins trace back to 1628 Dutch shipwreck

The Traitors origins trace back to 1628 Dutch shipwreck

October 23, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The global television hit The Traitors concludes its celebrity series on BBC One and iPlayer, with the finale scheduled for Thursday 29 October and Friday 30 October at 8pm, as The Guardian reported. What began as a 1628 Dutch maritime disaster on the Batavia inspired a reality TV show that grew into a hit broadcast internationally.

From a 1628 Shipwreck to a Modern Format

The origins of the deceit-based format trace back nearly 400 years to a shipwreck off the coast of Western Australia. When the Batavia struck a reef after setting sail from Amsterdam, stranded survivors faced a violent mutiny over silver reserves that left roughly 100 people dead. In 2015, Dutch creative entrepreneur Marc Pos encountered the historical account and envisioned it as a real-life psychological experiment, according to reports by The Guardian. Pos and co-creator Jasper Hoogendoorn initially developed the concept under the working title The Mutineers, pitching the idea to take place on a boat where banished players would jump overboard. After receiving 20 rejections, the creators moved the production to dry land. Drawing on Pos’s childhood memories as a choirboy in a 14th-century cathedral, they established a Gothic aesthetic featuring cloaked figures, torch-lit corridors, and a hidden tower. The Dutch iteration, titled De Verraders, premiered in 2021.

Scaling Up for British and American Audiences

British production company Studio Lambert acquired the UK and US rights after executives watched the Dutch broadcast. Creative director Mike Cotton stated that the team was immediately drawn to a format centred on trust rather than romance during an era dominated by dating programmes. Cotton and executive producer Sarah Fay visited the Dutch set before adapting the series. Studio Lambert supersized the production, altering the endgame and selecting Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands as the primary filming location. Each episode carries an estimated budget of £1 million—approximately double standard reality television spending—to fund cinematic elements such as exploding ships and elaborate cabins. BBC One controller Kate Phillips approached Claudia Winkleman to host the UK adaptation. Winkleman initially declined due to the four-week filming commitment away from home, but reversed her decision after viewing episodes of the Dutch original.

British Adaptation Viewership Reaches 14.9 Million Peak

Since its 2022 launch, the British adaptation has experienced exponential viewership growth. The inaugural series pulled in approximately 4 million viewers, while the second series reached 7 million, the third reached 9 million, and the fourth climbed to 11.5 million, The Guardian reported. The first celebrity edition last autumn peaked at 14.9 million viewers, making it the most-watched show of that year. Production executives deliberately designed the series to feel like a premium drama through set design, music, and the host’s styling. Winkleman maintains an active presence during filming, requesting monitoring screens in her dressing room to observe contestants’ strategic interactions.

Maintaining Independence in Gameplay

Producers adhere to strict hands-off guidelines regarding the actual gameplay, treating the production as a self-contained game rather than a manipulated television show. Fay highlighted the unpredictability of the format, noting that the production team recently returned from filming the seventh UK series. As the chaotic second celebrity edition reaches its conclusion across Thursday and Friday evening broadcasts, Winkleman admitted that the psychological turns among contestants continue to captivate those running the show.
