Senator Laurent Duplomb, the proponent of the recently passed law, has stated that extensive debates have already taken place regarding the legislation. Speaking to Franceinfo, Duplomb highlighted that discussions occured during the initial Senate reading, at the joint committee stage, and upon the conclusion of the joint committee’s work. He emphasized the broad parliamentary support for the bill, noting that 70% of senators and 60% of deputies voted in favor, asserting that it will become law upon promulgation by the President.

Duplomb acknowledged the legitimacy of opposition to his text, particularly when it operates within a legal framework, such as a petition. he characterized the differing viewpoints as representing two distinct societal visions: his own, which he described as being founded on work, growth, and sovereignty, and that of the petitioners. He criticized the petitioners, citing Sandrine Rousseau as an example, for what he perceives as a disregard for the profitability of economic activities and a desire to produce nothing domestically while ignoring essential realities.

The law received strong backing from the FNSEA, France’s leading agricultural union, and its affiliate, Young Farmers, who demonstrated with tractors in front of the Bourbon Palace. Quentin le Guillous, secretary general of Young Farmers, commented to AFP that while a discussion prompted by the petition might be acceptable, reopening the entire debate would be a meaningful waste of time and detrimental to the agricultural sector in the long run. Meanwhile, the French sugar beet planters’ association has raised concerns about the widespread appearance of viral jaundice in fields, warning of potential substantial losses for upcoming harvests.
