The Constitutional Court of Gabon rejected the appeal brought by part of the opposition and civil society against the electoral reform, Thursday July 27, 2023.

The Constitutional Court ruledinadmissible» the appeal filed by the members of the opposition platform Alternance 2023. The supreme court found through its decision that the referral should have occurred before the promulgation of the contested law, which was not done. Indeed, changes have been made to the electoral code. These modifications which do not help the opposition.

The latter therefore declared on July 17 “unconstitutional» Law No. 033/2023 of July 15, 2023 amending and supplementing certain provisions of Law No. 07/96 of March 12, 1996 as amended on common provisions for all political elections in the country. It was a question of seizing the Constitutional Court so that it could restore the authentication of the ballot papers, the joined envelopes and the presence of the representatives of the candidates in the polling stations.

Pending possible reactions from the opposition, let us recall that Gabon will organize three elections on August 26, 2023, namely the presidential election, the legislative elections and the local ones.
