The Mummy Returns & Fight Club: Classic Films Get Re-Releases & 4K Upgrades

Universal Pictures will bring Stephen Sommers’ 2001 adventure film, The Mummy Returns, back to theaters nationwide on March 27th, marking the film’s 25th anniversary. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, February 20th, according to a statement from the studio.

The re-release features Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz reprising their roles as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan, respectively. The film continues the story ten years after the events of 1999’s The Mummy, and notably introduces Dwayne Johnson in his acting debut as The Scorpion King, a character who would later receive his own prequel in 2002.

The Mummy Returns was a significant box office success upon its initial release in May 2001, described as “a gleeful ode to the spirit of Saturday morning serials” and “filled with bombast and eye-popping visual effects.” The plot centers on the reawakening of Imhotep after his mummified body is transported to a museum in London, initiating a new wave of terror.

The anniversary re-release coincides with a similar theatrical event for David Fincher’s 1999 film, Fight Club. That film will have a one-night-only screening on April 22nd, tied to the May 12th release of a 4K Ultra HD version of the film. The 4K release will include multiple commentary tracks, featurettes, deleted scenes, and press materials, according to announcements from Sony.

Stephen Sommers, who directed The Mummy Returns, previously directed 1999’s The Mummy, as well as 2004’s Van Helsing and 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Sommers began his career in theater and rock band management in Europe before attending the USC School of Cinema-Television.
