Hit Brit Comedy “The Inbetweeners” Set for Return
LONDON – Beloved British comedy “The Inbetweeners” is poised for a comeback, with new projects planned across film, television, and stage. A deal brokered between Banijay UK and Fudge Park unlocks the rights to revive the series, originally broadcast on E4 in the U.K. between 2008 and 2019.
The news follows an agreement allowing for the exploration of new content featuring Will MacKenzie, simon Cooper, Neil Sutherland, and Jay Cartwright – the four friends at the heart of the show’s enduring appeal. “Incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favorite friends (ooh friends),” representatives stated.
“The Inbetweeners” distinguished itself from contemporaries like “Skins” by presenting a deliberately unglamorous portrayal of adolescence, focusing on the awkwardness and, as co-creator Damon Morris described at the time, the often “crap” reality of teenage life. The series followed the misadventures of the group as they navigated school life, friendship, and the challenges of growing up at the fictional Rudge Park Extensive.
Over three series, “The Inbetweeners” achieved record ratings for E4 and garnered numerous awards. Its success extended to the big screen with two hit movies released in 2011 and 2014,both of which broke box office records for U.K. comedies at the time of their release.
The production company behind the original series, Bwark Productions – founded by Morris and Iain Beesley and later sold to Zodiak Media (acquired by Banijay in 2016) – is central to the new venture.
“We are thrilled to announce this exciting partnership with Banijay who share our vision and ambition for one of the most iconic comedies in British history,” said Jonathan Blyth, managing director of Fudge Park. “This is a fantastic moment for fans, there are exciting conversations afoot and more news to follow.”
Banijay UK CEO Patrick Holland added: “I have worked with Damon and Iain on a number of Fudge Park projects over the years and was delighted to pick up the conversation about the future of ‘The Inbetweeners’ with them. They have an infectious creative vision for the brand which will resonate with audience old and new so I can’t wait to get going.”
Banijay Rights will continue to distribute “The Inbetweeners.”
Since the original series concluded,Morris and Beesley have collaborated on projects including the comedy film “The Festival” and the BBC series “The First team.” Beesley also created “White Gold,” featuring members of “The Inbetweeners” cast, while Morris co-wrote “Next Goal Wins” with Taika Waititi, co-created apple series “Time Bandits,” and recently directed Netflix feature “My Oxford Year.”
