The San Francisco Signal, a professional women’s volleyball team competing in League One Volleyball (LOVB), announced on September 18, 2026, that the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium will serve as its home venue for its inaugural 2027 season, bringing elite athletic competition and a custom match-day arena setup to the city’s Civic Center.
Transforming a Century-Old Venue for Professional Volleyball
Opening its doors originally in 1915, the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium has spent more than a century functioning as a cornerstone for San Francisco culture, hosting landmark musical acts like Elvis Presley in 1957 and the Rolling Stones in 1965, alongside political conventions and athletic events. Operated by Another Planet Entertainment, the 8,500-seat facility will undergo a distinct spatial redesign for the Signal. According to team officials, the franchise plans to reduce the active seating capacity to roughly 4,000 fans, prioritizing audience proximity, sightlines, and an intimate, high-energy environment.
Stephanie Martin, President and Co-Founder of the San Francisco Signal, noted in interviews with local outlets that the selection process began in January with a firm commitment to playing within city limits. “This city is so much about creativity, innovation, and culture — and music is so interwoven in the city — so to be in a venue that has hosted landmark events, cultural moments, sporting events, concerts, we thought it is a great feel for us,” Martin stated to the San Francisco Standard.
Rather than relying on a traditional arena layout, the franchise intends to build a custom competition environment inside the Grove Street building. This setup aims to blend top-tier sports with designated spaces for fan engagement, hospitality, and entertainment.
Municipal Backing and the Bay Area Women’s Sports Boom
City leadership has thrown its support behind the team’s arrival. Mayor Daniel Lurie emphasized the economic and cultural upside of welcoming world-class athletes to the municipal landmark. According to statements released by the franchise, Mayor Lurie remarked that fans will have the unique opportunity to watch Olympic medalists and world champions compete locally, providing a major win for youth sports and local fandom.
The Bay Area has experienced a notable surge in professional women’s sports investments and fan turnout. League One Volleyball chairwoman and co-founder Jes Wolfe stated that the franchise represents an important step in cementing the region’s sports landscape, backed by an ownership group consisting of more than 50 individuals, including Olympic medalists and world champions.
Schedule and Training Preparations Ahead of the 2027 Launch
While the full 2026-27 League One Volleyball schedule remains unreleased, team leadership outlined the timeline leading up to the opening matches. Head Coach Alfee Reft, who joined the franchise after leading the UCLA women’s volleyball program, will oversee a 14-player roster reporting to training camp on November 1, 2026, at a newly established facility in nearby Brisbane.
The roster features prominent names, including Santa Cruz native and founding LOVB athlete Kelsey Robinson Cook, a three-time Olympic medalist. The team plans to open its competitive schedule on the road in December 2026, with its debut home match at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium scheduled for January 2027. Season tickets and group deposits are currently available for purchase.
While the Civic Auditorium serves as the primary home for the inaugural season, long-term infrastructure discussions remain ongoing across the region.
