The Hunted Hog: Historic Irish Pub Welcomes Locals & Stars in Castlemartyr

March 24, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

The Hunted Hog pub in Castlemartyr, County Cork, has been acquired by Castlemartyr Resort, according to recent reports. The pub, previously owned by comedian Pat Shortt, has a long history of attracting both local patrons and celebrity guests, including a reported visit from The Beatles in the 1960s.

Current manager Barry Hennessey, who has worked at Castlemartyr Resort for 13 years, emphasizes the pub’s enduring appeal as a community hub. “It’s homely here,” Hennessey said. “It’s social. People chat about the GAA, the rugby. Others sit quietly doing the crossword in the paper.” He highlighted the pub’s unique tradition of recognizing regulars, pointing to a plaque marking the favorite seat of a customer named Mark.

Hennessey, who runs the pub with his brother Colin, believes the core principles of hospitality remain consistent between the five-star resort and the local tavern. “In both establishments, you want to glance after the clients well,” he explained. “You want to make them happy and make sure they have a great time.”

The Hunted Hog’s celebrity clientele during Shortt’s ownership included Westlife, dancer Michael Flatley, comedian Tommy Tiernan, singer Sinéad O’Connor, and American stars Brad Pitt and Beyoncé. Legend has it that the Beatles stopped at the pub when their tour van broke down en route to a ferry in Rosslare.

More recently, Bruce Springsteen and The E-Street Band visited the pub while staying at Castlemartyr Resort during a Cork performance. Hennessey recounted that Springsteen even took to the stage for an impromptu performance and a traditional Irish music session.

Michaela Twomey, a bartender at The Hunted Hog, recently returned to the pub after a period working in finance. “I love working here,” she said. “I enjoy the cráic with all the familiar faces coming in. I know now what they all drink!”

The pub also features a popular outdoor marquee, used for post-wedding celebrations. “The day-after wedding parties when everyone is in good spirits love that they have a venue to themselves where they can eat, drink and be merry,” Hennessey noted.

The pub’s name itself is rooted in local folklore, referencing a massive 600-pound boar that terrorized the area in the 15th century. Legend tells of a Fitzgerald of the Geraldines slaying the beast, restoring peace to Castlemartyr. A stone etched with a boar and a cross remains at a local churchyard, Ballyoughtera, commemorating the event.

Hennessey believes the atmosphere of a traditional Irish pub is something special. “We see a vibe you don’t get in pubs abroad. We operate hard to keep it. The charm and traditional feel is unique. The Americans love it!”

The Hunted Hog is actively involved in the local community, frequently hosting charity events for organizations like Marymount. Hennessey acknowledged the challenges facing the hospitality industry, including rising costs, but remains optimistic. “We are fortunate to have the combination of serving drink and food,” he said. “There is always something going on.”

A framed photograph of a previous owner, Pat Barry, who died last year, hangs inside the bar, a tribute to his contribution to the pub’s history. The Hunted Hog is open daily from 1pm, serving food, drinks, and hosting events.
