The Fantastic Four: First Steps – John Malkovich Cut & Short Runtime

John Malkovich‘s Red Ghost Role Cut from The Fantastic Four: first Steps Due to Runtime Constraints

In a surprising turn of events for Marvel fans, director Matt Shakman has revealed that veteran actor John Malkovich’s portrayal of the villain Red Ghost has been entirely removed from the upcoming film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The decision, described as “heartbreaking” by Shakman, stems from the film’s relatively short runtime of 1 hour and 55 minutes, a departure from typical Marvel Cinematic Universe lengths.

Malkovich, a celebrated Hollywood legend, was slated to play the Russian scientist known as Red Ghost, who historically uses three “super-monkeys” to battle the Fantastic Four. While Malkovich did film scenes for the movie, Shakman explained to Variety that balancing the numerous elements within the film necessitated the difficult cut. “There was much to balance,” Shakman stated. “Some things eventually had to leave so that the final version could take shape.”

the Fantastic Four: First Steps is packed with narrative threads, introducing not only the titular superhero quartet but also a new universe. The film also features the formidable villain Galactus, portrayed by Ralph Ineson, and his herald, the Silver Surfer, played by julia Garner. The inclusion of Reed and Sue’s baby further adds to the film’s dense storyline. Despite the packed narrative, the decision to omit Malkovich’s character has raised questions about whether a slightly extended runtime could have accommodated his presence.

Fans will soon have the opportunity to judge Marvel’s decision when The Fantastic Four: First Steps premieres in cinemas next week.
