MTV Axes Multiple Music Channels
End of an Era as Digital Platforms Dominate
Several MTV channels, formative for generations of viewers, are slated to cease broadcasting by the end of 2025. The move signals a shift in music consumption, with the operator consolidating its market presence.
Key Stations Shutting Down
Reportedly, channels like Club MTV, MTV 80S, MTV 90S, MTV 00S, MTV Hits, and MTV Live HD will disappear from screens across multiple markets, according to Živé.sk. Additionally, Hungarian-language channels of Comedy Central and Paramount Network are also expected to be discontinued.
Tomáš Holý, a representative of Axocom, the company that sells these channels, stated, “Unfortunately, we do not have this information,”
when asked about the end of the programs.
Ad-Free Viewing Disappearing
MTV channels, despite broadcasting primarily in standard definition, gained popularity for offering uninterrupted music content without commercial breaks. This format stands in contrast to today’s ad-heavy television landscape.
However, the channels operate on a paid subscription basis. Music channels face declining viewership; recent data show that streaming now accounts for 84% of music industry revenue.
Digital Platforms Reshape Music Consumption
The decision to discontinue these channels reflects the growing impact of digital platforms. YouTube provides high-quality music videos, while services like Spotify and Apple Music offer personalized experiences.
These platforms deliver personalized recommendations, exclusive content, and off-line modes.
As such, traditional linear music broadcasting struggles to maintain its appeal, particularly among younger audiences.
Remaining MTV Presence
While many channels will disappear, MTV Europe, localized with Czech subtitles, will continue to broadcast. However, its programming has shifted away from music, focusing instead on reality shows and entertainment content.
Competitive Landscape
The exit of MTV channels could benefit other broadcasters. The Óčko Group, with its several channels, including Óčko, Óčko Star, Óčko Black, and Óčko Expres, remains a player in the market. Further music channels such as Rebel, retro, mezzo, iConcerts and Šláger are still available.
The main problem that these channels have is that they send a lot of advertising.
