The E-Bike Battery Safety Crisis: Understanding Lithium-Ion Hazards

August 17, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

On August 17, 2025, an exploding lithium-ion battery inside an illegal repair shop in a Queens home sparked a massive fire that destroyed the single-family residence, according to FDNY officials. The 3.5-hour blaze in Fresh Meadows required more than 60 firefighters and EMS personnel to extinguish the flames in the cellar.

Inside the Fresh Meadows Incident

Firefighters responding to the basement blaze on Pidgeon Meadow Road near 164th Street around 7:30 p.m. discovered roughly 100 lithium-ion batteries burning in the cellar, per FDNY reports. The department stated on X that the owner operated an illegal lithium-ion battery repair business at the location, where multiple micromobility devices were found in various states of disassembly and disrepair. Beyond the active fires, an FDNY hazmat unit recovered 600 individual battery cells from the basement.

Broader Enforcement and Safety Metrics

The FDNY Bureau of Fire Prevention slapped the homeowner with a Criminal Court summons for illegally storing e-mobility devices alongside several fire code violations. As of August 2025, the FDNY has fought 172 lithium-ion battery fires, outpacing the prior year’s figures by five incidents. Fatalities remain a critical concern following a July 4 incident where a 76-year-old grandmother, Yuet Kiu Cheung, died after being trapped in a Queens pizzeria bathroom during an e-bike battery fire. That incident marked the first lithium-ion battery fatality in the city for 2025, following six deaths the previous year and 18 fatalities in 2023.

Investigators emphasize that the hazardous devices driving these statistics are typically uncertified by Underwriters Laboratories or similar safety inspection companies. Instead, operators and delivery workers frequently purchase cheap replacements online or through local scooter stores. Many delivery workers accumulate knockoff backup batteries to keep their devices continuously charged, increasing thermal runaway risks. To mitigate these risks, municipal awareness campaigns urge owners to use factory-installed equipment, avoid overnight charging, and store bikes outside.
