Valais Grants Blatten €10 Million in Emergency Aid Following Glacier Collapse
SION, Switzerland - August 17, 2023 – The Grand Council of Valais has approved an immediate allocation of CHF 10 million (approximately €10.3 million) in emergency aid for the village of Blatten, severely impacted by the recent collapse of the Birch glacier. the decision, made during an extraordinary session, aims to provide critical support for reconstruction and stabilization efforts in the wake of the devastating event.
The glacial collapse, occurring earlier this month, caused widespread damage to infrastructure and property in Blatten, leaving residents facing notable hardship. The emergency funding will address immediate needs, including securing the area, providing temporary housing, and initiating the complex process of assessing and repairing damaged buildings and essential services. This aid package represents a crucial first step in a long-term recovery plan for the affected community.
The State Council explained the urgency of the situation, citing the need to rapidly address safety concerns and support the displaced population. According to officials, the funds will be distributed to cover costs associated with debris removal, geological assessments to determine ongoing risks, and financial assistance to residents and businesses.
