The common cold remedy branded one of the ‘biggest health scams’

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Popular ⁢Cold remedy ⁢Branded a ⁢’Health Scam’ by‌ leading Scientist

London, ‍UK – A widely-used over-the-counter cold remedy has been labelled one of the “biggest health scams” by a prominent scientist, sparking renewed⁢ debate over the efficacy ⁢of treatments for common colds.Professor Ron Eccles, a retired ⁢professor of immunology at ⁣cardiff University, claims ⁢that many popular decongestant nasal sprays offer little ⁤to no ‌benefit and can even be detrimental‍ to long-term nasal health.

For‌ decades, consumers have relied on these sprays – containing ingredients like xylometazoline and oxymetazoline -‌ to relieve blocked noses during colds. Though, Eccles argues that⁣ the sprays ⁢work by ‌simply ⁢constricting⁣ blood vessels in the nose,⁤ providing temporary relief that ⁢quickly ⁤fades and can ‌lead to rebound congestion, creating a ‌cycle of dependency. He estimates that millions are spent annually on these products, offering minimal genuine therapeutic value.

Eccles, who spent 30 years⁢ researching the common⁢ cold, asserts that the body is perfectly capable ⁤of clearing a blocked ‌nose naturally. He recommends alternative, non-drug methods such as nasal ⁢rinsing with⁣ saline‌ solution, steam inhalation,⁣ and staying ‍hydrated. “These sprays give the illusion of ⁢clearing the nose, ⁤but they don’t‌ actually treat the underlying cause,” he explained. “They just mask the symptoms and can make‍ things worse⁣ in the long run.”

The scientist also suggests herbal⁤ remedies like ⁣ginger ⁤or clove⁢ tea for comfort, and emphasizes the benefits of humidified air in easing coughing.

Health officials advise seeking medical attention if a cough persists for more than three weeks, involves⁣ coughing up blood, causes difficulty breathing,or is accompanied by chest pain. These symptoms‍ could indicate more serious conditions such⁤ as lung ⁣infections (pneumonia or tuberculosis), chronic lung diseases (COPD‍ or asthma), lung ⁢cancer, ‌or even heart⁤ failure and blood clots. NHS 111 should be contacted ⁢for urgent help if ‌unsure, a GP appointment sought ‌for persistent symptoms, ⁣and emergency medical care accessed for severe chest pain or breathing difficulties.
