The Comeback Season 3 Premiere: Every Thought We Had
The FX series “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette,” now streaming on Disney+, has sparked renewed scrutiny of the couple’s relationship, with some who knew them pushing back against the show’s dramatization of events. The series, which has quickly become Disney+’s most-watched offering with over 25 million hours viewed, has drawn criticism for its portrayal of the couple’s life together and, specifically, a contentious fight depicted in Episode 8.
That episode culminates with John F. Kennedy Jr. Leaving the couple’s Tribeca apartment for a hotel following a heated argument, just days before the July 16, 1999, plane crash that killed Kennedy, Bessette, and Bessette’s sister, Lauren. The series is based on Elizabeth Beller’s book, “Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy,” but has been accused of leaning toward “mythmaking” according to critics and former acquaintances.
One point of contention highlighted in the series, and subsequently fact-checked by USA Today, involved a scene depicting Kennedy and Bessette sharing a meal of Kentucky Fried Chicken. The scene initially appeared as potential product placement, but was confirmed as a genuine detail from the couple’s life, as reported by Beller, based on accounts from Bessette’s friend, Hamilton South.
The show’s dramatizations have prompted responses from figures connected to Kennedy and Bessette. Actress Daryl Hannah, who previously dated Kennedy, has publicly responded to the series. Kennedy’s nephew, Jack Schlossberg, has also voiced criticism. The series itself includes a disclaimer acknowledging that while based on real events, certain characters and moments have been dramatized for narrative purposes.
The final episode of “Love Story” is scheduled to air on March 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will be available for streaming on Hulu.
