Pakruojis, Lithuania – This september 20th and 21st, Pakruojis Manor will once again host the “Bumb for Bulbulės” Autumn Festival, culminating in the second annual World zeppelin Championship. More than just a culinary competition, the event is a vibrant celebration of Lithuanian culture, with the cepelinai - the nation’s iconic potato dumplings – taking center stage.
The cepelinai, affectionately nicknamed “zeppelins” for their shape, are a source of national pride. This year’s championship promises to draw dozens of participants from across Lithuania, all vying for the title of Zeppelin Master. judging the competition will be Tadas Kanapeckas, a pakruojis native and passionate advocate for authentic Lithuanian cuisine.
World-Today-News.com spoke with Kanapeckas about the enduring appeal of cepelinai, the nuances of a truly exceptional dumpling, and his anticipation for the upcoming festival.
The Essence of a “Real” Zeppelin
“What makes a ‘real’ cepelinai?” Kanapeckas pondered. ”it’s about more than just the recipe. It’s about the feeling. The filling, of course, needs to be balanced – a good ratio of meat to potato. But it’s also the texture, the sauce, and crucially, how it’s served.”
He emphasizes the importance of presentation, advocating for a bowl rather than a flat plate to properly cradle the dumplings and their accompanying sour cream. “The sour cream is essential, and a good potato grater makes all the difference. But ultimately,” he says with a smile, “the hostess puts her heart into it, and that’s what truly elevates the experience.”
kanapeckas also shared a surprising anecdote about a childhood friend’s mother who served cepelinai with tomato sauce – a decidedly unconventional, yet memorable, variation.
When asked about a fitting anthem for the beloved dish, Kanapeckas didn’t hesitate: “Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, from his 9th Symphony. It’s grand, celebratory, and full of…well, joy!”
Judging with Passion (and a Full Stomach)
Kanapeckas expressed his delight at being invited to judge the championship. “It’s a great honor,” he said. “Pakruojis Manor is a source of immense pride for our city, and to be involved in this event is very special.”
He acknowledged the subjective nature of judging, noting that while taste is paramount, speed-eating prowess could also be a factor. “A vegan judge might have a different perspective, but I, for one, will be taking full advantage of the possibility to sample the entries!”
