The Batman Part II: Building on a Billion-Dollar Foundation

The Batman, released on march 4, 2022, grossed $770.8 million worldwide, revitalizing the Batman franchise with a darker, detective-focused approach. Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman was lauded for its intensity and vulnerability. The film was shot primarily in Liverpool, England, and Chicago, Illinois, utilizing extensive practical effects and set pieces.

The core supporting cast is expected to return, including Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.Paul Dano‘s chilling performance as the riddler (Edward Nashton) in the first film has fueled speculation about his potential return, and the post-credits scene featuring Barry Keoghan as the Joker has strongly suggested he will play a significant role in the sequel. Keoghan’s joker is depicted with a distinct, scarred appearance, differing from previous interpretations.

The film exists as a standalone entity within the broader DC Universe, categorized as an “Elseworlds” project by DC Studios. This means it will not directly connect to the new DC Universe being spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran, beginning with Superman (2025). This allows Reeves and Tomlin creative freedom to explore their unique vision of Gotham City and Batman.

Fans can bridge the gap between films with the HBO Max/Max series The Penguin, starring colin Farrell, which serves as a direct continuation of the events of The Batman and delves into the rise of Oswald Cobblepot. The eight-episode series premiered on september 30, 2024.

The Batman – Part two is currently scheduled for release on October 2, 2027.
