The Abidjan-Praia highway and the Dakar-Bamako railway project, two major projects that were at the center of the meeting on July 4, 2025, between Sidiko Douka, ECOWAS and Yankhoba Diémé commissioner, Senegalese Minister of Terrans and Air Infrastructures and Transport. According to an information note, these two projects with common denominators, strengthening infrastructure and the facilitation of connectivity in West African countries.
“The Abidjan-Praia motorway intends to link several countries in the sub-region, of which Senegal is a project that meets growing needs for modern infrastructure. The second project, the railway connecting Dakar to Bamako, will focus on the Dakar-Tamba section, and will impact positively on the development of transport and trade, “it is said.
The same source informs that Minister Yankoba Diémé has focused on the importance of regional integration, specifying that “integration is not an option, but a necessity”. To this end, a meeting of the Abidjan-Praia Corridor Steering Committee is scheduled for September in Sierra Leone to take stock of these projects.
The Minister also insisted on the need to involve local populations and maintain effective communication between the countries concerned.
“The discussions around the route of the corridor are underway to obtain the agreement of Guinea-Bissau and Liberia. At the same time, it was pointed out that rail could reduce road accidents and improve economic logistics, especially with the creation of dry ports, “reads the note.
These initiatives are not only intended to stimulate the economic development of the region, but also testify to a desire for unity and cooperation between the countries of the sub-region.
