Thomaston Grammar School Celebrates Empathy and Kindness with Student Awards and Fun Activities
Thomaston, ME – january 16, 2026 – Thomaston Grammar School (TGS) concluded a month-long focus on empathy with a heartwarming assembly on January 12th, recognizing students who consistently demonstrate kindness and understanding towards others. The event, brimming with positivity and school spirit, also celebrated student achievements through raffles and a spirited “Penguin Waddle Race.”
Recognizing Empathetic Students
Throughout December, TGS students were encouraged to practice empathy in their daily interactions. Teachers awarded tickets to students observed displaying empathetic behavior,fostering a school-wide culture of compassion. These tickets culminated in a raffle held during the January 12th assembly, where six lucky winners received prizes.

The award recipients were: Madison Marchio,Payson Makinen,Zion Peart,Riley Blakeway,Jayce Thurston,James Magnoli,Levi Saroka,Avery Cole,Kaleb Barnard,Hadley Hatch,Phoebe Edwards-Jenks,Logan McRae,Anastasia Magnoli,Juliette Johnson,Milo Fisher,Vivien Hedstrom,Gemma Rubino,and Opal Wellman. These students were specifically recognized for their ability to understand and share the feelings of those around them – a crucial skill for building strong relationships and a positive community.

The assembly also featured the presentation of the Principal’s Award to Vivien Hedstrom.Principal Riley praised Vivien as a role model, highlighting her consistent kindness, respect, and commitment to embodying the school’s values of safety, kindness, and personal best. A Fun Finale: The Penguin Waddle Race
The assembly concluded with a lively and entertaining “Penguin Waddle Race.” Four teams, representing different classes, waddled their way around the gymnasium, navigating an “iceberg” obstacle. The race was a resounding success, filled with laughter, encouragement, and a display of teamwork and perseverance. In a thrilling finish, Miss Heal’s team and Mrs. Bassett’s teams tied for first place, capping off a memorable event.
