Texas Teen Loses Limbs After Flu Complications | Kaydin Ruiz Story
Kaydin Ruiz, a 13-year-old from Kerrville, Texas, is undergoing treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital after losing both legs and her right arm to amputation on March 17, 2026. The amputations followed a rapid decline in health beginning in late January, initially presenting as flu-like symptoms that escalated into septic shock and multi-organ failure.
According to Kaydin’s mother, Amanda Valdez, her daughter first experienced fever, chills, and body aches on January 23rd. The condition initially prompted a visit to the emergency room where Kaydin received oxygen and fluids before being discharged to continue hydration at home.
However, Valdez reported that her daughter’s condition quickly worsened. “She went into respiratory distress, started turning blue,” Valdez said. Doctors subsequently diagnosed Kaydin with strep pneumonia, septic shock, and multi-organ failure.
The case highlights the potential for severe complications arising from common infections. Doctors are emphasizing the importance of vaccination to mitigate the risk of severe illness, as Kaydin faces a lengthy recovery process that will include healing, rehabilitation, and fitting for prosthetics.
Family members have been sharing updates on Kaydin’s condition through social media, seeking continued support and prayers. As of March 24, 2026, Kaydin remains hospitalized and is still fighting, according to reports.
