Texas Tech and Utah Set for Big Noon Kickoff Showdown

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – the highly anticipated Big 12 Conference opener between the No. 21 Texas Tech Red Raiders and the No. 20 Utah Utes has been scheduled for a national broadcast on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff, the conference announced Monday.The game will kick off at 11:00 a.m. Central Time on September 20th from rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.
This matchup promises to be a compelling early-season test for both programs as they begin their conference schedules. The broadcast team will feature play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson, analyst Joel Klatt, and sideline reporter Jenny Taft, bringing viewers extensive coverage of the action.
The game marks Texas Tech’s first-ever visit to Salt Lake City and only their second trip to the state of Utah. The Red Raiders previously played Brigham young University (BYU) in Provo during the 2023 season.
A Brief History Between the Red Raiders and Utes
While this is a relatively new rivalry in the modern era,Texas Tech and Utah have a history dating back to the early 1970s. The two teams first met in 1972, wiht the Red Raiders securing a dominant 45-2 victory over the utes in Lubbock. They met again the following year, with Texas Tech emerging victorious once more, winning 29-22. That 1973 win helped propel the Red Raiders to an impressive 11-1 season culminating in a Gator Bowl victory over Tennessee.
This September 20th contest will be just the third all-time meeting between these two programs.
Next Up for Texas Tech: Oregon State
before heading to Utah,Texas Tech will complete their non-conference schedule against Oregon State this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT and will also be televised on FOX. Demand for tickets is high, with fewer than 500 remaining as of Monday afternoon.
The Big 12 Conference will announce kickoff times for the remainder of Texas tech’s conference schedule on a rolling basis, either 12 or six days in advance, based on selections made by it’s television partners – ESPN, FOX, and TNT sports.
