Texas Tech Hosts Boise State in Home Soccer Opener

August 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Texas Tech hosts Boise State at the John Walker Soccer Complex in Lubbock, Texas, on Sunday at 7 p.m. for its first official home match of the season. The Red Raiders enter the matchup at 1-0-1, facing a Boise State squad carrying a 17-match unbeaten streak—the longest active run in the country according to Broncos Athletics.

Opening Weekend Realities and Weather Resilience in Lubbock

The Red Raiders return to Texas following a grueling season-opening trip to Hawaii. Texas Tech defeated Hawaii 1-0 before playing Seattle to a scoreless draw in the middle of a tropical storm, according to match reports. Head coach Tom Stone noted that the adverse conditions tested the program’s grit right out of the gate.

“I’ve never coached in a game like that,” Stone stated regarding the stormy draw in Hawaii. “It was a mess, but it showed we were willing to dig in under very adverse conditions. A passing team does not want that kind of game in the wet and the wind, but we survived it, didn’t concede and had a couple of opportunities.”

That defensive resilience kept clean sheets intact for goalkeeper Addie Todd during the opening weekend. However, the offensive output remained limited to a single goal across two matches. Stone emphasized that the team spent practice sessions focusing on one-on-one situations, counterattacks, and sharpening execution in the final third.

Breaking Down Boise State’s Historic Run

Boise State arrives in Lubbock following its own 0-0 draw against SMU in Dallas, where the Broncos outshot the Mustangs 12-8. That result extended Boise State’s unbeaten streak to 17 matches. They have not recorded a loss since falling to UTEP on September 7, 2025.

A technicality exists within that streak. Boise State was eliminated by Utah State in penalty kicks in last season’s Mountain West championship match, but matches decided by a shootout are officially recorded as draws for both teams. The Broncos therefore enter Lubbock without an official loss in more than 11 months.

Tom Stone warned against dismissing the visitors as an unorganized side. “They have a plan to put you under a lot of pressure,” Stone explained. “There’s a lot of service scenarios that you’ve got to be ready for. There are teams that don’t have an organized way and it’s just chaos. If that’s what people think of Boise State, they could not be further from the truth. They are organized in what they do and they’re dang good at it.”

Tactical Battles and Defensive Priorities

Stone pointed out that Boise State consistently puts the ball into dangerous areas, forcing opponents to deal with sustained pressure and secondary balls.

“The ball will be in our box a bit,” Stone said. “There will be service that we have to deal with, and both teams are going to try to pick up second balls. It’s a really unique style.”
