Texas National Guard Troops to Return from Chicago as Deployment Faces Legal Challenge
CHICAGO, Illinois (KLTV) – Approximately 200 members of the Texas National Guard stationed in the Chicago area are preparing to return home as a legal dispute over their potential deployment continues, according to sources within the U.S. government.
On October 5th, Texas Governor Greg Abbott authorized the deployment of 400 Texas National Guard troops, at the request of President trump, to support Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in several major U.S. cities. Two hundred of those troops arrived in Chicago on October 7th.
However, a federal judge issued a ruling on October 11th preventing the deployment of the troops within Chicago city limits.that ruling remains in effect. The 200 National Guard members have since been stationed at training facilities outside of Chicago awaiting further orders.
The legal challenge, brought by the state of Illinois,is currently pending before the U.S. supreme Court. The court will determine whether the Trump management possesses the legal authority to deploy the National Guard troops for this purpose. A timeline for a Supreme Court decision has not yet been established.
Late Friday, the U.S. Northern Command, under the Department of defense, announced adjustments to troop distribution in major cities via a post on X (formerly Twitter). The command stated its commitment to supporting law enforcement partners and indicated a plan to “shift and/or rightsize” its Title 10 presence in Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago to maintain a long-term presence.
The future deployment location for the returning Texas National Guard members remains uncertain.
