Texas Daylight Saving Time 2026: Dates & Cities Affected

by Emma Walker – News Editor

Texas will observe Daylight Saving Time (DST) in 2026, shifting clocks forward two hours on Sunday, March 8, at 2:00 a.m. And reverting to Standard Time on Sunday, November 1, at the same time. The seasonal time adjustment will impact major metropolitan areas including Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, centers of the state’s economic and transportation activity.

The change, aligning Texas with the federal schedule, aims to extend daylight hours into the evening and coordinate timekeeping with neighboring states in the Central and Mountain time zones. According to the official schedule, clocks will move forward from 2:00 a.m. To 3:00 a.m. On March 8, resulting in a loss of one hour. The return to Standard Time on November 1 will see clocks turned back from 2:00 a.m. To 1:00 a.m., gaining an hour.

This applies to all areas of the state observing both Central Time and Mountain Time. Residents are advised to adjust manual clocks the night of Saturday, March 7, and Saturday, October 31, respectively. Local recommendations emphasize reviewing operate, transportation, and school schedules around the adjustment dates.

Major cities across Texas will be affected by the time change. Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, along with cities like El Paso and Fort Worth, will adjust schedules for transportation, energy, and public services. The intention of DST is to maximize daylight during the afternoon, potentially enhancing road safety, supporting recreational activities, and boosting commerce in businesses like restaurants.

Even as smartphones, laptops, and smartwatches typically update automatically, many household devices require manual adjustment. These include kitchen clocks (ovens, microwaves), wall clocks, radios, basic timers, older sound systems, vehicle dashboard clocks, and irrigation, security, or climate control systems not connected to the cloud.

Texas adheres to the federal DST schedule, meaning the dates and times for the change are determined nationally. Authorities have stated that DST helps synchronize schedules across states, improve natural light utilization, and support economic activities. However, ongoing debate exists regarding the impact of DST on sleep, productivity, and health, leading to proposals for change, though no modifications have been confirmed for 2026.

Travelers should be aware that flights between Houston (HOU) and Dallas (DFW) may be affected by the time change, with one-way flights currently priced starting at $81 and round trips at $117, according to Expedia. Rome2rio indicates various travel options between the cities, with costs starting at $49.

Residents are encouraged to gradually adjust their sleep routines in the week leading up to March 8, verify public transportation schedules, flight times, and work shifts, and ensure that irrigation and security systems maintain correct programming after the change.
