Know Your Foe: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

HOUSTON – The Houston‍ Texans face a meaningful test this Sunday‍ against a resurgent Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense led by quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has quickly become a‍ focal point for opposing defenses. Mayfield’s ability to extend‌ plays and deliver crucial throws, coupled‍ with the continued dominance of⁣ wide receiver Mike Evans, presents⁣ a multifaceted‍ challenge for ⁢the Texans.

The Buccaneers’ offensive success ‌hinges on Mayfield’s performance. As 2023, he has thrown the most touchdown passes in the NFL. ⁤Unlike quarterbacks who remain‌ stationary in‌ the pocket, Mayfield’s mobility forces defenses to remain disciplined and adaptable. A key to slowing down the Buccaneers’ ‌passing attack will ⁤be keeping Mayfield⁤ contained within⁤ the pocket and forcing throws outside the hashes.

A⁣ major component of Mayfield’s success is his connection with Mike Evans, ‌a future Hall of Fame receiver in his 11th season. While Evans still ⁢possesses the ⁢deep-threat ability, he ⁤has evolved‍ into a key target on short and intermediate routes – slants, ⁣digs, ⁢and interior routes. Texans cornerbacks Derek Stingley Jr. ⁣and Kamari lassiter must be prepared for⁤ Evans’⁤ physicality and ⁤ability to exploit any ⁣defensive lapses.

Complementing the passing game, limiting the Buccaneers’ rushing attack is ‍crucial. In⁢ the 2023 matchup, the Texans held ⁤Tampa Bay to just 81⁣ yards on 31 carries‌ (2.6 yards⁤ per carry).‍ The Buccaneers’ running backs averaged 3.1 yards per carry against Atlanta. The Texans’ defensive‍ front, considered stronger at the point of attack than Atlanta’s, will aim to contain running backs Bucky Irving and Rachaad White.
