Terminator-Like Robots Patrol Chinese Streets: AI & Police Tech

A humanoid robot resembling characters from the “Terminator” film franchise has begun initial trials patrolling a public space in Shenzhen, China, according to reports and video footage circulating online. The EngineAI PM01 robot was observed in the Nashan District, walking alongside two police officers in a tourist area.

The deployment represents a first step in assessing the potential for humanoid robots to support public safety efforts, though the timeline for official integration remains unclear. EngineAI, the manufacturer, gained attention in December with the launch of its T800 model – a 1.73-meter tall, 75-kilogram robot priced at CNY180,000 (USD26,040) – and recently hosted a humanoid robot combat league with a $1.44 million prize.

While the EngineAI robots have garnered attention for their imposing appearance, other Chinese companies are developing more approachable humanoid robots for similar roles. AiMOGA is collaborating with local governments to deploy its “RoboCop” Intelligent Police Unit R001, equipped with six high-definition cameras, to assist traffic officers during peak hours and respond to disruptions. The Hangxing No.1 robot, featuring cameras, voice intelligence, and traffic light integration, is too undergoing testing in several Chinese cities, designed to aid pedestrians and reduce policing costs.

China has significantly invested in robotics technology, and Chinese firms are increasingly prominent in the humanoid robot market. The EngineAI PM01 and T800 models, alongside the AiMOGA and Hangxing robots, suggest a multifaceted approach to integrating robotics into public services. While there are currently no official plans to replace human police officers, the ongoing trials indicate a growing interest in exploring the capabilities of these technologies.

In February 2026, EngineAI launched a humanoid robot combat league in Shenzhen, further demonstrating the company’s commitment to advancing humanoid robot technology. The league, named the Ultimate Robot Knockout Legend, began on Monday and will run through December.
