Ten emblematic films of sharks to devour or revive

Paris, France – A new shark thriller, Under the Seine, directed by Xavier Gens, has made waves on Netflix, drawing comparisons to earlier aquatic creature features. Released in the summer of 2024, the French production centers on sharks in the Seine River, a departure from the Venetian canals featured in Gens’ 2008 film Shark’s in Venise. While acknowledging some flaws, critics suggest Under the Seine surpasses the less aquatic-focused 2022 film Shark year, starring Kad Merad,Marina Foïs,and Jean-Pascal Zadi. The global success of Under the Seine has sparked discussions about a potential sequel, contingent on developing a compelling new narrative twist.

Meanwhile, the 2018 blockbuster in troubled waters, directed by Jon Turteltaub, continues to captivate audiences. Inspired by the success of the Jurassic Park franchise, this Sino-American co-production revived the prehistoric shark, the Megalodon, for a global cinema audience. Starring Jason Statham as a submarine pilot, the film, which leans towards action-comedy, was noted for its relatively low on-screen gore. The film’s popularity led to initial considerations for a series, but plans shifted to a sequel, in very troubled waters, released theatrically in 2023.Both films are available on streaming platforms, including Netflix and Canal+.
