Telenor Sued for 130 Million Kroner by Myanmar Customers
The Swedish non-profit organization Justice and Accountability Initiative (JAI) filed a class action lawsuit on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, against the Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor on behalf of its customers in Myanmar.
The legal action alleges that Telenor shared sensitive and private customer data with Myanmar’s military authorities following the 2021 coup. The claimants assert that this data sharing is directly linked to serious human rights violations, specifically targeting individuals suspected of opposing the military takeover.
The lawsuit seeks damages totaling at least 130 million Norwegian kroner. In addition to the overall claim, organizations are demanding compensation of 9,000 euros—approximately 100,000 Norwegian kroner—for every person in Myanmar who became a victim of the company’s data sharing with the junta.
Telenor Group has denied having knowledge of the legal proceedings. In an email to Dagens Næringsliv, Information Manager David Fidjeland stated that the company is not aware of any lawsuit and therefore has no basis to comment on the specific allegations or the financial claims being made.
