Teen Girls Lead Self-Harm and Suicide Attempts in Rio Grande do Sul

September 28, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 represent the majority of reported suicide attempts and self-harm incidents across Rio Grande do Sul, according to 2025 preliminary data released by the State Health Department (SES).

  • Adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 registered a peak self-harm notification rate exceeding 437 per 100,000 residents in Rio Grande do Sul during 2025.
  • State health department data and national school surveys indicate that young females experience significantly higher rates of body dissatisfaction and thoughts of self-harm compared to young males.
  • Clinical specialists emphasize that psychological distress frequently manifests through behavioral shifts like irritability and withdrawal rather than overt sadness.

Epidemiological Overview of 2025 Self-Harm Notifications in Rio Grande do Sul

Statewide health tracking for 2025 recorded a total of 12,003 cases of violence involving self-inflicted injuries across Rio Grande do Sul. Analysis of these figures by age group demonstrates that the frequency peaks among teenagers. For females aged 15 to 19, the notification rate surpassed 437 per 100,000 inhabitants. In contrast, males within the same cohort registered a rate of 182.4 per 100,000.

The gender gap widens further among younger adolescents. Among pre-adolescents aged 10 to 14, the female rate reached 313.5 per 100,000, while males recorded 43.4 per 100,000. This disparity of seven times underlines an early onset of severe psychological distress among young girls.

Body Image Pressures and Eating Disorder Risks as Clinical Triggers

Medical professionals point to expectations and unattainable aesthetic standards as drivers behind female self-harm. Bruno Guidolin, coordinator of the psychiatry service at the Hospital de Clínicas de Ijuí, notes that contemporary youth face pressures to mature rapidly, which frequently translates into frustrations and self-injurious behavior.

According to Guidolin, the search for extreme thinness correlates with cases of anorexia and bulimia among adolescents. These behavioral changes often emerge alongside anxiety regarding physical maturation and identity formation.

Corroborating these regional observations, the National School Health Survey, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Health among students aged 13 to 17, found that 25% of surveyed girls feel life is not worth living, while 43% reported past intentions of purposeful self-harm. Among male respondents, these figures dropped, with 12% expressing despair and 20% reporting self-harm ideation. Also, 36.1% of girls expressed dissatisfaction with their physical appearance, compared to 18.2% of boys.

Contrasting Suicide Mortality Profiles Across Demographic Cohorts

While non-fatal self-harm notifications predominate among adolescent females, completed suicide statistics in Rio Grande do Sul display a different demographic distribution. Out of 1,557 total suicides registered in the state in 2025, men aged 80 and older exhibited the highest mortality rate, standing at nine times that of women in the same age group.

Data analyses indicate that males lead completed suicide counts across nearly every age bracket, except for the 10 to 14 age group. Bruno Guidolin attributes this trend to traditional social conditioning that discourages men from acknowledging emotional distress or seeking professional psychological support. Consequently, male attempts often involve more lethal methods when individuals lack accessible channels for mental health intervention.

Psychiatric evaluations emphasize that psychological suffering in young people frequently evades simple detection, as distress rarely presents as standard sadness. Clinicians advise families to monitor behavioral changes persisting across days or weeks. Key indicators include heightened irritability, social withdrawal from peers and family members, abandonment of favored hobbies, significant disruptions in sleep or appetite patterns, diminished personal hygiene, and a drop in academic or occupational performance. Consulting a qualified mental health professional or seeking evaluation through pediatric and psychiatric medical services remains essential when these persistent behavioral alerts arise.
