Ted Lasso Season 4 Anthony Head Tribute Explained
Ted Lasso Season 4 paid tribute to late series actor Anthony Head with a dedicated title card in Episode 9, titled “Mae Rides the Bus,” which streamed on Apple TV. The emotional dedication arrived months after Head died at age 72 in June 2026, following a delay that allowed the show to complete an off-screen story arc for his character, Rupert Mannion.
Why Episode 9 Delivered the Anthony Head Tribute
When Season 4 of Ted Lasso debuted on Apple TV without an immediate memorial for Anthony Head, viewers questioned the omission. Producers chose to hold the tribute until Rupert Mannion’s shadow had fully cleared from the current plot. In Episode 8 and Episode 9, the narrative revolved around whether Rupert was secretly buying shares to reclaim AFC Richmond, a theory ultimately debunked when Tracey Ullman’s character, Zelda Southport, was revealed as the actual buyer.
Once Rupert’s off-screen machinations concluded and the Zelda Southport twist landed, producers deployed the memorial card.

Cast member Annette Badland, who portrayed Mae, shared her thoughts on Head with Deadline. “He was a beautiful man, and he will be much missed,” Badland said, recalling their time together on set and praising his charm and generosity during the iconic Season 1 darts sequence. Badland also admitted she assumed Head would appear in the final production block, noting that very few people knew he was ill.
Cast Reflects on Character Deaths
The penultimate episode of the season balanced multiple emotional beats, pairing the memorial for Head with the sudden death of Annette Badland’s character, Mae. Badland confirmed to Deadline that she is doing well in real life, despite the shocking script development for the beloved proprietor of The Crown and Anchor pub.
While Head’s villainous character Rupert did not make a physical appearance in Season 4, his lingering threat dominated the front half of the season. Head passed away on June 1, 2026, due to complications from pneumonia.
“We will miss him, I respect him, and it’s a great honor to be in the episode that is dedicated to him,” Badland told Deadline regarding the historic ninth episode.
