Tech Giants Urge US Lawmaker Action on Data Privacy Rules

March 23, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

A joint statement released today by six of the world’s largest technology companies – Google, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Meta, Microsoft, and TikTok – calls on U.S. Lawmakers to establish a new regulatory framework for online platforms or extend existing legislation to address concerns surrounding child safety and online addiction. The companies urged Congress to update the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, arguing that current laws are insufficient to manage the evolving digital landscape.

The request comes as these companies face increasing scrutiny and legal challenges related to the potential harms their platforms pose to young users. Meta and Google are currently defending themselves in a high-profile trial alleging they intentionally designed their platforms to be addictive, contributing to mental health issues in young people, according to reporting from Bloomberg. The trial has reportedly shifted focus to the personal life of the plaintiff, a detail the companies are leveraging in their defense.

LinkedIn, meanwhile, is experiencing a surge in advertising effectiveness, with a return on ad spend (ROAS) of 121%, according to PPC Land. However, the platform also notes that the buyer’s journey for business-to-business purchases is lengthening, now averaging 272 days. This suggests a more complex sales cycle, potentially influenced by the increased time users spend online and the require for more extensive engagement.

The call for legislative action also follows reports of internal struggles within tech companies regarding employee concerns about platform design. A former Meta engineer recently revealed he requested a demotion due to ethical concerns about the company’s practices, but found the process unexpectedly difficult, as reported by Business Insider.

The joint statement reflects a growing awareness within the tech industry of the need to address regulatory pressures. Axios reported recently on the enduring dominance of the advertising duopoly held by Google and Meta, highlighting the significant influence these companies wield and the challenges lawmakers face in attempting to regulate them. The companies’ unified appeal suggests a coordinated effort to proactively shape the debate around online regulation.

The statement did not specify preferred legislative approaches, but emphasized the need for a “modernized” framework that balances innovation with user safety. Representatives from the companies are scheduled to meet with members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee next month to discuss the issue further.
