Taylor Swift Concert Film Dominates Box Office, Outperforming New Releases
LOS ANGELES, November 26, 2023 – Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” concert film continued its impressive run at the box office this weekend, exceeding the performance of several new releases including “Smashing Machine.” The film shared premium large-format auditoriums with “Smashing Machine,” “One Battle After Another,” and a re-release of “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
“Smashing Machine,” a new release, earned $1.1 million across Friday and previews in 2,140 locations alongside the “Avatar” re-release. disney’s re-release of “Avatar: The Way of Water,” timed ahead of the upcoming “Fire and Ash” sequel, also grossed $1.1 million on Friday.The “Avatar” reissue is projected to earn substantially less then the $10 million opening the first “Avatar” re-release achieved in 2022.
Meanwhile,Paul Thomas Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio’s “one Battle After Another” took in $3.3 million on Friday, a 43% decrease from its opening day. Despite the drop, the film is benefiting from positive word-of-mouth, awards season buzz, and demand for premium large-format screenings. A domestic total of $42 million is projected through Sunday,though its $130+ million production budget requires continued strong performance to become profitable.
Other films in the market saw varying results. “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie” earned $1.2 million on Friday, projecting a $4.7 million second weekend-a 66% fall. “The Conjuring: Last Rites” added $1.2 million on Friday, a 41% drop, bringing its domestic total to $164.9 million.
IFC Films’ horror indie ”Good Boy” earned approximately $980,000 on its opening day across 1,650 venues, and is expected to debut near the bottom of the top 10. Focus Features’ “Anemone,” starring Daniel day-Lewis in his first role in eight years, earned $310,000 on Friday and is projected to earn $900,000 in its debut across 865 locations.
