Tatra Phoenix: New 16×16 Trucks for Military & Heavy Duty Use
A world-first 16×16 right-hand-drive Tatra Phoenix chassis has been completed in the Czech Republic and is en route to Australia, purpose-built for Victorian communications infrastructure company Quantum Comms. The specialized vehicle will carry a Bronto Skylift S104HLA aerial platform with a working height exceeding 100 metres, making it one of the most capable mobile elevated work platforms in the country.
The chassis, designated Tatra Phoenix 8GR64P 16×16, represents the first of its kind produced within the Phoenix range. Its development was a collaborative effort between Tatra Trucks, Australian distributor Offroad Trucks Australia and lift specialist Bronto Skylift AUST/NZ, requiring extensive engineering and custom design work to meet Australian operating conditions.
The vehicle’s unique design features eight axles, with the first three and rear two axles steerable to enhance maneuverability despite its considerable size. All axles are fitted with wide 445 mm tyres, providing an axle rating of up to 10 tonnes. This configuration is designed to handle the structural and operational demands of the 100-metre class lift, according to Offroad Trucks Australia.
Powering the Phoenix 16×16 is a PACCAR MX-13 engine, producing 390kW (530 hp). This engine is paired with a 12-speed TraXon transmission, ensuring efficient operation in heavy-duty applications. The vehicle is also compliant with Euro 6 emissions standards.
Tatra’s modular backbone concept, originating from a 1996 collaboration with DAF, allows for bespoke configurations like this 8-axle design. The Phoenix series began production in 2011. The right-hand-drive cabin has already been delivered to a bodybuilder for the installation of the elevated working platform.
A second 16×16 unit is currently in production for Quantum Comms, indicating a continued investment in this specialized technology. The chassis is built on Tatra’s unique backbone design, utilizing air suspension on all axles.
