Tasmania Rugby union Launches Complete Review of State Rugby Landscape

HOBART,TAS – The Tasmania Rugby Union (TRU) has initiated a notable review aimed at assessing and enhancing all facets of rugby union within the state. This broad-ranging evaluation will scrutinize the current structures of competitions, clubs, and their associated organizations, with a keen focus on key areas critical for rugby’s future in Tasmania.

The review will delve into several vital components, including:

  • The effectiveness and format of current competition structures.
  • strategies for attracting and retaining players.
  • Development pathways for both junior and senior players.
  • The development and long-term sustainability of rugby clubs.
  • Alignment of governance practices and strategies for community engagement.

TRU President Isaac Anderson emphasized that this review is a proactive measure designed to ensure rugby in Tasmania is strategically positioned for sustained growth, improved performance, and increased participation. “We recognize the need to take a strategic, evidence-based approach to how our competitions and clubs operate, grow and evolve,” Anderson stated. “Mike brings deep expertise and an self-reliant lens that will help guide our decision-making into the future.”

Sports consultant mike McLaughlin, who possesses extensive experience in community and professional sports strategy, will lead the review. McLaughlin will collaborate closely with TRU stakeholders, encompassing clubs, players, administrators, volunteers, and othre partners, to ensure a process that is both collaborative and inclusive.

The comprehensive findings and recommendations from this review are slated for presentation to the TRU Board in December 2025. These outcomes will serve as the foundation for a strategic roadmap guiding the next phase of rugby’s development across Tasmania.

The TRU is committed to transparency throughout the review process and encourages all members of the rugby community to actively participate in consultations and contribute their ideas to help shape the future of the sport.
