JackJumpers and Melbourne United Bring Fierce Rivalry to Thursday
The JackJumpers enter Thursday’s matchup undefeated on Tasmanian soil for the NBL27 season. Melbourne United arrives with a distinct historical edge on the road, having won 23 of its last 24 Thursday night games.
The two franchises share a fierce rivalry, highlighted by their collision in the NBL24 Championship Series. Neither team has managed to score more than 97 points in a single game against the other since March 18, 2024.
Injuries Sideline Key Players for Both Teams
Both teams face significant personnel hurdles as they step onto the court. Tasmania lists Ben Ayre as a test for a hip flexor injury, while Josh Bannan is a game-time decision with rib soreness. Majok Deng is sidelined with a lower leg injury and is projected to return between rounds 8 and 10. Anthony Drmic is dealing with a back issue with no return date set, and Bryce Hamilton remains out indefinitely following an ACL injury.
Melbourne travels without Chris Goulding, who is out with a calf strain until around Round 5. Sean Macdonald is out for the season following an ACL injury.
Tasmania’s expected depth chart features Taran Armstrong at point guard, supported by Stoddart and Bayles. Johnson and Marshall cover small forward, Bannan and the recovering Deng man power forward, and Magnay and Gold anchor the center position.
The shooting guard spot features Wilson, Hynes, and Shelley, with Goulding unavailable. Travers, Ingles, Machar, and Fa’ale line up at small forward. Waardenburg, Bowen, and Bradtke cover power forward, while Oduro and Krslovic fill the center roles.
Point Guard Showdown and Star Matchups
Thursday’s game centers on the backcourt duel between Taran Armstrong and Cole Anthony. Both guards serve as the primary offensive catalysts for their respective teams, occupying top positions in the league’s assist statistics.
Supporting scoring power runs deep on both rosters. Tasmania counters with Will Magnay, Josh Bannan, and David Johnson. Melbourne deploys Josh Oduro, Luke Travers, and Joe Ingles to match that frontcourt and wing production.
