Tampa Bay’s Most Paw-some Pets: Meet the 2026 Winners!
A St. Petersburg rescue dog named Asher has been crowned Tampa Bay’s “Most Paw-some Pet” in a contest hosted by a local publication. The announcement follows a two-week voting period that saw participation from numerous pet owners across the region.
Asher, a 1.5-year-old dog, was adopted on December 14, 2024, after being found abandoned in a warehouse and rescued by a local organization. His owner, a former dental hygienist, has affectionately nicknamed him “The Flossing Doggie™” due to her habit of gently flossing his teeth. Asher’s popularity extends to social media, where his Instagram account, @lil.mr.asher, features videos of him enjoying ASMR-inducing snacks like crunchy lettuce and apples.
The contest, which invited nominations from pet owners throughout Tampa Bay, received 35 entries encompassing dogs, puppies, and cats. Asher secured first place, followed by Bama, a three-year-old border collie–poodle mix from St. Petersburg, and Winston, a four-year-old British shorthair.
Bama’s owner, Danielle Whitener, discovered the puppy on a girls’ trip in Athens, Alabama, and felt an immediate connection, particularly as they shared the same birthday. Bama now enjoys a life of sunshine, long walks, and games of fetch in St. Petersburg.
Winston, described as a cat of composed demeanor and strict adherence to routine, is known for his polite and observant nature. His owner notes that he approaches daily life with restraint, takes naps with great seriousness, and appears to expect consultation on household matters, maintaining impeccable standards and a calm authority.
Asher resides in the Water Street Tampa neighborhood, a developing area featuring luxury apartments. Asher Residences, located at 1050 Water Street, offers studio, one, and two-bedroom apartments ranging in size from 386 to 1325 square feet, with rental rates starting at $2091, according to Apartments.com and Zillow. The complex boasts amenities such as a rooftop pool, fitness center, and co-working lounge. The Asher building was designed by Morris Adjmi Architects and is managed by Bozzuto.
