Tampa Bay Rays sweep New York Yankees to advance in postseason

Tampa Bay Rays sweep New York Yankees to advance in postseason

October 8, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The Tampa Bay Rays advanced to the Championship Series by defeating the New York Yankees 4–3 on Wednesday night, completing a three-game sweep of their postseason series, according to a report by rds.ca. The win eliminated a Yankees team that entered the season with a payroll of $303 million, the third highest in Major League Baseball, while the Rays operated with a $91 million payroll, ranking 26th.

Tampa Bay secured the American League’s top regular-season performance with 98 wins, carrying that momentum into the series with 1–0 and 5–2 victories. Playing at Yankee Stadium, the visitors broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when Jonathan Aranda hit an RBI single. Ben Rice answered for the Yankees in the bottom half of the frame to tie the score.

In the fourth inning, Yankees starting pitcher Max Fried threw a wild pitch that allowed Ryan Vilade to advance. Spencer Jones nearly caught a drive near the right-field wall for the Yankees before coming back with a double that drove in Anthony Volpe to make it 2–2. Fried exited in the sixth inning after allowing a two-run home run to Victor Mesa Jr., finishing his night with 5.2 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, seven strikeouts, and four earned runs.

The Yankees mounted another threat in the later frames. Volpe drove a deep ball to left field that Mesa leaped against the wall to play, but the ball ended up in the stands as Volpe rounded the bases. Officials reviewed the play after a fan reached over the boundary wall to interfere with the possible catch.

Bryan Baker entered in the ninth inning to close out the one-run advantage for the Rays. Trent Grisham struck out for the final out to seal the series win.

Payroll Disparities and Roster Construction in the American League

The Yankees played the series without team captain Aaron Judge. The three-time American League Most Valuable Player missed the postseason after straining a calf muscle on September 16. Judge appeared in only seven games after May 31 due to a fractured rib and a separate leg injury, leaving an offensive void the lineup could not overcome.
